BBFI Participates in Local Bus Ministry

BBFI Hosts Demonstration for Bus Ministry of Heritage Baptist Church

05/23/04 Kentwood, MI -- BBFI President, Fred Murphy and his son, Michael Murphy participated in the Second Annual Spring Party for the Bus kids of Heritage Baptist Church of Kentwood, Michigan.  The demonstration was choreographed to be approximately ten-minutes long (including forms, weapons, and breaking demonstrations).

Approximately 120 bus kids were in attendance of this event.  Bill Reits, the Leader of the Bus Ministry at Heritage, championed the planning of the event.  From staff orientation, issuance of security badges for staff, disciplinary actions, prayer time, scheduling special guest performances, and an all-you-can-eat pizza lunch, Bill was truly vital to the success of the 5-hour event.  Though when complimented on his leadership skills, he humbly replies, "To God be the glory, He is the reason this has been successful.  I only followed His direction."

Immediately following registration, the bus kids were ushered into the church auditorium to sing a few praise songs that were familiar to them.  Then they enjoyed a Christian-oriented Magic show performed by Tim Sytsma .  The Christian Education Director, Gary Boven, shared a time of devotion with the kids.  Pizza was served in large quantities.  Following a time of playing carnival-type games, the kids gathered in the parking lot for a Karate demonstration.

BBFI President, Fred Murphy, worked the sound for the musical performance, while his son Michael performed one traditional formal exercise (kata or form) to music, a weapon performance with the sai, and breaking.  As anticipated, the breaking demonstration was the highlight of the demonstration.  Following a warning "not to try this at home", Michael broke several boards and bricks with his hands and feet.  The first series of breaks were with single boards.  Before breaking a board, Michael held the board up to the spectators and explain that a board is not an easy thing to break.  If you hit it incorrectly, it could hurt -- a lot!  He continued, "Even though it is hard for a beginner to break this board, with God's help I can learn and develop skills to do it."  He then showed how breaking boards is similar to resisting temptation to sin.  To illustrate this point, he used a marker to write the word "HATE" on the board.  Then he explained that sometimes we can be tempted to be hateful to someone, but God does not want us to hate anyone.  So with His help, we can defeat the temptation and break Satan's influence in our lives.  As he broke the board, he yelled, "Satan, you have no power over me!  God will give me the power to defeat you!"  Other sins that were written on boards and bricks include Disobedience, Racism, Cheating, Lying, Stealing, and for the finale, an unmarked board.  The last break of the day was a depiction of how sometimes Satan tries to tempt us with multiple things all at once.  As he labeled and stacked the boards, Michael stated, "This board represents the temptation to lie, this one is for stealing, this one for cheating, and this one is blank because it represents the sin you have the biggest problem resisting.  I don't know what sin it is, but you do.  Today we are going to defeat it.  I challenge you to claim the power of God to beat the temptation as we break these boards here today."  With the help of a little lighter fluid, he lit the boards on fire and broke them.  His closing statement was, "There is nothing special about me, but there is something very special about God!  Let's give God a big hand for being God and loving us, and forgiving us of our sin when we ask him!"

Following the demonstration, kids asked if they could keep debris from the demonstration.  Fred and Michael thought it was a great idea -- the kids could take home a reminder that they can defeat Satan when tempted to sin.
